Hit the highway

ARE YOU listening? Do you hear? You can choose to ignore the Spirit if you want. You can shut your eyes and ears. But why would you?

Why would you choose to close your heart to the voice of our Creator? If you listen, he tells you the most powerful truth of all time.

The Spirit of God says you are beloved. Shame has no power over you anymore.

So why not just let it go once and for all? Are you going to hold onto that guilt forever?

Many live in fear these days. What are they afraid of anyway? Maybe they’re afraid to feel. But if you don’t feel, you don’t live.

Still, they run and hide in their ambitions or false comfort. They seek refuge in a bottle or a pill. They rage against someone or something. They live angry or all alone. Anything to try to ease the pain.

But inside, the soul aches, it suffers, as love has been stripped away. The soul says, “No matter how much you try to ignore me, I feel everything anyway.”

There will always be pain. This is part of human existence. We can try everything to deny this, but it never works.

Why not seek the Spirit of God instead? Why not cry out to the Creator of the universe?

He promised that he will not leave us as orphans. And God is faithful. He is good. His promises are good for all eternity.

Frustration often accumulates inside us for years and years. We don’t even realize we carry this inside. So if you must, go for a drive. Go alone. Hit the highway, crank up the music and shout out the words. Or scream into your pillow or out in an open field. Let it all out.

Let out all the frustration and anger you’ve built up inside. Cry out loud to the Creator and give up all your pain to heaven. Don’t hold anything back. Lay it all at his feet.

And when all that bottled up energy has been spent, fall to your knees. And let the tears fall, don’t be afraid. Let it go into his tenderness. Ask him to heal you. Ask to be free. Ask for forgiveness. He will give it all to you and so much more. He will give you your life back.

You may have put your life on a shelf all these years because you were hurt. You were ashamed and afraid. But when those poisonous lies — that you don’t matter, that your life is a mistake — when all that is drained from you, it all pierces the flesh of Christ.

He takes it all with him. It comes to rest in his wounds. Peace is returned to you. Then the Spirit of God comes rushing in like a river.

Then you can live again. You can feel again. The feelings are powerful and strong. But you are stronger now too. You can take it as you are fully alive again.

You feel the wind and the rain upon your face. You welcome the heat of the sun. Your soul sings and cries out truth and freedom.

The Spirit of God lives within you. It’s the Spirit of creation, of the resurrection and eternal life. And this Spirit thrives within you.

Are you listening? Do you hear?

The Spirit of Jesus calls out to you. Lovingly, longingly, and forevermore.

“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
