What will he say to you?

Far from the home of my ancestors, far from the memories of my youth, in this desert land I roam.

How did I get this far? What drove me so deep into the wilderness?

Why must I face the heat and howling wind against me? A thirst rises from deep within.

Much more than just dry bones and parched lips, it’s a deeper thirst — my soul, tired and weary, cries out for life giving water.

My life thirsts for life.

For far too long I tried to fill the emptiness with dead things.

I ran from here to there, diving head first into false promises — all of them dead ends.

And I came away more thirsty than before.

. . . . . . .

They spoke to me about the Messiah.

And even in the wilderness, a tiny part of me remains hopeful that all they told me about him is true.

When will the Christ come? What will he say to me?

What will he tell me about him… about me?

Will he even bother to look at me?

My eyes are tired and weary. I struggle to lift up my face to seek him.

Is my hope mistaken?

Will my thirst drag on forever?

. . . . . . .

Suddenly he calls to me.

It’s the voice I’ve been waiting to hear all my life.

My weary soul says, yes, it is him, the Messiah they spoke of.

From his word, spirit and truth burst forth.

His mercy fills the emptiness inside.

. . . . . . .

O Lord, I yearn for the gift of God.

Give me the living water you promised so I will never be thirsty again.

Soothe the hurt that burns inside.

Cleanse me of my dirt and shame.

Restore my dried-out spirit with your living water.

Only you can quench my deepest thirst, my Lord.

Only you can satisfy my soul.

And I will tell everyone what you told me.

The truth is I am forgiven and beloved.

And in your Spirit I fly free in the well of eternal life.

. . . . . . .

but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
