WHAT happens when you disagree or have a fight?
Maybe you had to stand your ground. Then there’s a misunderstanding, a distance.
Maybe you made mistakes, and there’s brokenness left behind.
A complicated history unfolds.
It’s a mess of hurt that’s so hard to clean up, so hard to heal.
And you wonder…
for how long Lord?
How long until the hurt and anger go away?
Will we ever be close again?
Will true tenderness ever return?
And the tempter tries to sneak in.
The other person is so wrong, the devil tells you. Or he says you are the disaster here. Forget about it, there’s no hope left, he whispers.
And meanwhile the silence, harsh words, or indifference pierce your already wounded heart.
It becomes unbearable at times. The hurt runs so deep.
How can you take it anymore?
And the Lord Jesus tells you, I understand you.
I know the hurt you feel. I know what distance feels like. I know what rejection does to your spirit.
I know that pain all too well.
You want so much to be close again, but there’s a ten story wall separating you.
And Jesus tells you, I waited for you.
I waited patiently for you to open the door.
I won you over with tenderness, not by force.
I won you over with deep honesty and sincerity of the heart, not blocked or driven by fear.
I waited for you fully alive with love.
Do not let the waiting harden your heart.
The heart of Christ is always open, waiting, and hoping.
It’s a miraculous mix of patience and bursting anticipation, of not compromising your principles, yet loving and forgiving all the time.
It’s watchful waiting, expecting nothing yet trusting in every possibility for restoration.
You may wait for years, but hope burns in your heart as fiercely as it did on the first day.
How can you sustain this tension, this unyielding optimism? How do you stay hopeful when all you see is a great distance?
You go to the source of the impossible.
You go to God.
And there you will find the strength.
In the Lord you encounter peace.
God assures you he is always at work for the good of those who love him.
Do you believe in this? Do you believe in him?
Appeal to his goodness. Cry out for his mercy.
Learn to pray for the heart of the other person and for yours too.
Pray for restoration of the bond.
Whatever it takes to return.
Whatever it takes to heal.
Whatever it takes to bring tenderness back.
Whatever it takes, O Lord.
You showed me how far you will go for me.
Let me journey with you to the limits of love.
Take me to the place where nothing else matters, and I have no self interest.
Only love remains.

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.Psalm 13:1-2,5-6
